From my living room couch, I will be live-blogging WWDC 08. Below is an excerpt from MacRumors’ rumor roundup, and I know they would do a much better job at this than I ever would.
MacRumors’ WWDC 08 Rumor Roundup

  • The 3G iPhone

The 3G iPhone will be announced at WWDC 2008. There really can be no doubt. It’s certainly been no secret that the iPhone will eventually adopt 3G technology. When Steve Jobs first introduced the iPhone in January 2007, he specifically said (video clip) that Apple plans on making “3G phones and all sorts of amazing things in the future”. Fast forward to the today (aka “the future”) and there’s been a growing mountain of evidence that we will see the 3G iPhone on Monday. In fact, as early as March we felt there was enough evidence to recommend people wait to buy an iPhone because of the likely June release.

Since March, we’ve heard “confirmation” from multiple sites (Gizmodo, GeekSugar) that June 9th is launch day. Add to that the fact that the Apple Store has been out of iPhones for a month as additional evidence that the iPhone revision is on its way. Apple has also been adding 3G preferences to their latest iPhone 2.0 beta software.

Meanwhile, AT&T has been kind enough to complete their 3G rollout by June and prohibit their staff from taking vacation between June 15th and July 12th in preparation for an “exciting Summer Promotional Launch”.

Apple has also lined up carriers from around the globe, including Japan, Spain, Hong Kong, Australia and many more — with some of the countries only having 3G networking support.

Zinio is a site that lets you read digital copies of magazines, but it costs a fee. Now, with this simeple how to, you can read these magazines for free on your computer. Here’s how:

Zinio has implemented an iPhone/iPod touch site that lets you read mags for free. Now, you can use Safari on your computer for that to.

First, go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and check “Show Develop menu in menu toolbar”.

Then, head over to http://zinio.com/iphone and go up to the develop button in the menu. Click either Mobile Safari 1.1.3 iPhone or Mobile Safari 1.1.3 iPod touch.

Then, copy and paste http://zinio.com/iphone into your address bar in that tab again, and voila! You can know browse MacWorld UK, US News, Playboy, Popular Photography, Popular Mechanics, and many many more.

NOTE: The pages ARE NOT in puny iPhone sizes. They are full resolution and fine to view on your PC.

P.S. The above screenshot is my PC laptop with a Mac theme and ObjectDock.

I’ll admit that the original OLPC put doubts in my mind from the very beginning, but the OLPC 2.0 looks stunning. With it’s 2 flip touch screens, it’s LED backlit screens, it’s brilliant. It’s slim, sleek, and beautiful. If I was shown the above pictures without knowing the OLPC, I would assume it was made by Apple. Time will tell, however, if Nick Neg can keep his promise of this XO-2’s price to $75. The Get 1 Give 1 Plan was also announced to return August or September 2008.

That’s right. HBO Shows on iTunes have Variable pricing. The exact thing NBC wanted Apple to do with their shows…

NBC is probably really p***ed off at Apple right now…

“I just received a 16GB touch for my birthday, but unfortunately I have about 20 GB of music/videos etc. I expect this number to grow, so I am considering exchanging the 16GB touch for a 80GB classic for the greater storage capacity. I am still undecided because I really like the wifi and other added features of the touch. However, I also have an Eee PC, which is really enough to fulfill my portable wifi and web needs. Still, the touch has many more features over the classic. Which should I get? Thanks for the help!”

Well, if you can afford a new one (and you could sell you old touch), I would actually recommend the newer 32 GB iPod touch. That should be a good size. An 80 GB classic is a good choice, but it seems you want the wi-fi and added features of the touch. An Asus Eee PC is a nice little machine, but it’s not meant for holding and playing media. That’s more of a second or third-hand computer.

Hope that helps! If you have any questions (anonymous commenter), you can comment on this post.

April 22 is Earth Day. To help support Earth Day, you can call you local representative or senator at 202-224-3121, and ask them to enact tough and fair climate change legislation. If you’re not in the US, go here, here’s a list of phone numbers in a PDF: http://ww2.earthday.net/files/home/UNMEMBERS_PARLIAMENT.pdf

Yesterday, a company named Psystar announced a new project, an OpenMac. The OpenMac is an unofficial (and illegal) machine that lets you run Leopard like you would run it on an actual Mac, except without the cost. This “Mac” will cost you $400. Cheaper than the Mac mini.

There were some reports that the site had gone down today, but it’s now back up and running. There hasn’t been any call from Steve’s lawyers yet. You can get more details on the OpenMac here.

iPhone webapp

Podcaster – A nice weapp that let’s you stream your favorite podcasts through EDGE or Wi-Fi. A great convenience to have. One problem is that the animation that slides from one page to another is slow and sluggish, and sometimes crashes Safari. You also need to create an account, and either choose from a list of podcasts, or enter in the RSS address through your PC/Mac.

Hahlo – The best webapp for Twittering on your iPhone. Very smooth, very simple. Sign in with your Twitter account and you’re ready to go. Simple interface, not sluggish, and looks good. Overall, it’s very nice. I would definitely recommend it over Thincloud Twitter, PocketTweets, or iTweets.

Welcome to a new feature to this blog, called the iPhone Webapp of the Week!

NOTE: Most of the webapps will also work on the iPod touch, so for this first post I added it to the title.

Now, let’s get started.

CNET for iPhone – http://iphone.cnet.com/

CNET for iPhone (and iPod touch) is a webapp that let’s you browse through CNET’s excellent content, such as news.com and download.com, but will also let you watch CNET TV programs on your iPhone!

However, there are some problems. First of all, you’re limited to the shows available on CNET TV. You can’t watch Loaded or CNET Live. Another problem is that even though they specially format Crave and Webware to your iPhone, you can’t surf their forums. Just some features that should have been there.

If anyone reads this blog, and has one of the above Apple devices, you can now add this site to your homescreen. However, you can’t just click “Add to homescreen” in the bookmarks menu. I’m afraid WordPress.com doesn’t let you do that. Here’s what you have to do:

  • Go to http://www.scm.keele.ac.uk/webclipr/#_home on your iPhone or iPod touch
  • Scroll down and press “Create Web Clip”
  • Now, enter in what you want to call the bookmark. I recommend “WI”.
  • Now enter in the address of this blog. http://whiteinnovation.wordpress.com
  • Now, enter in this tinyurl in the images slot and press create: http://tinyurl.com/569k2m
  • Follow the instructions and press add to home screen on the bookmark icon on bottom of your screen.

Now, you’re all set! The icon is a little rainbow apple logo. I felt retro at the time. :p
